What Does Re-key a Lock Mean?

SPL Security Solutions • July 12, 2022

When most people think of changing a lock, they believe they have to replace the entire thing. However, in many cases, it’s possible to simply “re-key” the lock, which means changing the internal mechanism so that it works with a new key.

This is often a cheaper and easier option than replacing the entire lock. However, while re-keying is a relatively simple process, it’s important to hire a qualified locksmith to ensure that it’s done correctly. Let’s take a closer look at what re-keying is and when it’s needed.

The Process Of Re-keying A Lock

When a locksmith re-keys a lock, they are changing the tumblers inside the lock so that they will fit a new key. This process is usually done when someone loses their keys or when a new tenant is moving into a rental property.

To re-key a lock, the locksmith will first remove the cylinder from the housing. They will then remove the old tumblers and pins from the cylinder and replace them with new ones. Once the new tumblers and pins are in place, the locksmith will test the cylinder to make sure it works with the new key.

Finally, they will reattach the cylinder to the housing and test the lock again to make sure it is working correctly. The whole process usually only takes about 15 minutes to complete for each lock.

When Should I Consider Having My Locks Re-keyed?

As any homeowner knows, the security of your home is of the utmost importance. One way to help keep your home safe is to have your locks re-keyed on a regular basis. However, there are a few specific instances when you should consider having your locks re-keyed.

First, if you have recently moved into a new home, it’s always a good idea to have the locks re-keyed. This way, you can be sure that only you and your family have access to the house. Next, if you have had a break-in, it’s also a good idea to have the locks re-keyed as this will help to deter future break-ins and ensure that a thief can’t easily gain access to your home if they stole one of the old keys.

Finally, if you have lost your keys, it’s also a good idea to have the locks re-keyed. This way, you can be sure that no one else has access to your home.

Why re-keying a lock is not a DIY process

Re-keying a lock is not a task that should be undertaken by a novice. The process requires knowledge of the inner workings of a lock and the ability to disassemble it without damaging the delicate components.

In addition, re-keying a lock requires special tools that are not typically found in a home toolkit. Without the proper tools and expertise, it’s easy to damage the lock or make it impossible to reassemble. As a result, it’s best to leave re-keying to a professional locksmith who has the experience and expertise to do the job right.

In addition, most locksmiths will offer a warranty on their work, giving you peace of mind in knowing that your home is secure. When it comes to something as important as your security, it’s always best to leave it to the experts.
